Good Girl VR

Good Girl VR studies the subconscious of the artist whose brain has short-circuited. The VR space is an interactive virtual representation of the cultural, economic, and political layers that inform the artist. Each layer is personified through a performance art personnae. In the companion installation, “Good Girl Labs” presents the artist’s frozen body and invites visitors on an experiential study exposing the paradoxical demands, desires, and coping mechanisms of American’t life.

As Summer 2017 was approaching, I really wanted to pitch something diy that could give my own take on the art and aesthetics that inspire me. I had been learning VR at an internship with Sony the previous summer. VR reminded me of the ultimate canvas for Net Art, where artists fill the empty browser space with collaged references speaking to the artist's nostalgia, subconscious, and re-appropriations. I was raised on the internet as a kid, then spent young adult years fan-girling the performance art drag scene that uses bodies as a canvas to speak satirically or viscerally. After being surrounded by creative people in the queer club scene like Boy Child, and photographers like Parker Day, I really wanted to bring performance into the digital world, and do so to explore something meaningful for me: a self-ethnography and self-archaeology mapping out all of the layers that confuse my identity on the daily.
